Hello, Much has been happening lately with the Zend Framework team. I'm happy to announce that we've just released ZF 1.8, and it packs a powerful punch! One of the most powerful new features is rapid application development (RAD) using the new code generation classes, allowing developers to bootstrap their applications quickly – and also to easily modify and expand them later, while maximizing adherence to ZF best practices and guidelines. Also available are new cloud classes - abstracting and simplifying access to Amazon's S3 and EC2 services, exposing users to scalable deployment infrastructure.
We've also recently released an update to Zend Server which now includes ZF 1.8, so get them now while they're hot, either as a part of Zend Server or standalone ZF 1.8.
In addition, we have made some exciting changes in the ZF group recently. Wil Sinclair, who led the project for the past two years, through a 12x jump in popularity – has moved over to work directly with Andi Gutmans on strategic projects. In turn - Matthew O'Phinney, ZF Architect, was named the ZF project leader – a much deserved promotion. And finally, to add a personal angle to all of this – the team has moved to report to me. It's actually the first time I'll be personally involved in the Zend Framework project, and I'm sure it's going to be both interesting and a lot of fun. Enjoy!
Zeev Suraski, Chief Technology Officer

TIPS AND TRICKS
Developing Multilingual Web Applications
The web has broken down all geographic boundaries, requiring developers to make web applications multilingual. Internationalization (the activity of making an application localizable) and localization (the activity of adapting an application to a locale) have become a key requirement for companies who operate globally.
Zend Framework makes localization and internationalization easy. In a new DevZone article, Jan Burkl will walk you through the steps of creating and localizing a Zend Framework application using the Zend_Locale and Zend_Translate packages.

How to Compile PHP Extensions with Zend Server
One thing the world does not lack is PHP extensions. In fact, due to PHP's popularity the number of available extensions is quite dizzying. To date, Zend Server includes 77 PHP extensions that Zend considers essential or just very helpful for most PHP developers. Still, what if the one that your code uses is not among them? And what if you wish to compile one of the extensions Zend Server is shipped with in a different way?
Jess Portnoy provides detailed instructions on how to compile extensions in two scenarios – a PECL extension and an extension from the main PHP source.

Taking Zend Server for a Spin - (Part 2 Debugging) - by Ed Kietlinski
In my last article we took Zend Server for a quick spin, getting some Zend Framework demos to work and we started to look at application monitoring. In this article I will be configuring Debugging/Profiling between Zend Server and Zend Studio for Eclipse to enable better troubleshooting and quicker resolution. When things go wrong in your app, you want to know about it ASAP and fix the problem quickly before it affects the end-user. Zend Studio for Eclipse can be tightly integrated with Zend Server and gives you a powerful way to address application problems. I'll be building upon my last article so if you want to follow along, please install Zend Server and get everything working from my PART 1.

CASE STUDY
Cyberpresse.ca Site More Productive with Zend Solutions
Media conglomerate Gesca owns daily newspapers in Quebec and Ontario and has over 80 million page views per month on their Montreal Cyberpresse.ca site alone. Cyberpresse uses a 3rd party content management system (CMS) running PHP on Apache as a backend (on Windows Server) that produces rendered pages, as well as another backend system on Windows Server, IIS, and Microsoft SQL Server for text mining, along with a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP (LAMP)-based lightweight frontend where they manage sessions and cookie data for all user accounts. They have significantly optimized their systems using Zend's web application servers, says Matthieu Delorme, chief technology officer at Gesca Digital, "Root cause analysis ... alone saved us many hours of coding. Code was debugged and much higher quality in half or less the time it used to take." Delorme continues, "Zend's production solution allows us to debug 10x faster compared to anything we had before."
