ZendCon: October 19th – October 22nd San Jose, California
The conference will be the largest gathering of the PHP Community and will bring together PHP developers and business managers from around the world for three days of exceptional presentations and networking events. At ZendCon 2009, sessions will focus on creating, deploying and managing applications that take advantage of the speed, scalability and simplicity of PHP.
Please contact your sales representative (or me) to find out how multiple people at your company can attend ZendCon at a discounted rate!
Below is a list of the i5-specific tracks: "Zend Core for IBM i Security Consideration" presented by Tony Cairns, IBM Practical security considerations for PHP on i5/OS. This session will cover i5/OS specific administrative concerns with Apache setup (PASE/ILE), files, libraries, etc. Followed by i5/OS unique PHP programming APIs from i5/OS toolkit and various DB2 direct access considerations. This will not duplicate other sessions covering in-depth PHP programming security issues.
"Mazda: Advanced web services and PHP: strengths & flaws" presented by Olivier LÈpine, Quatrain Technologies 2009 has seen the launch of a brand new cars plate management system in France (web services based on WS-* exts & java). Among the 36 carmakers on the market, only Mazda decided to develop with PHP on its IBM i servers (AS/400). This session describes how PHP helped Mazda connect its IT to the Interior Ministry web services, what still lacks, what the versatility of PHP and ZF made possible.
"PHP and IBM i - Database Alternatives" presented by Erwin Earley, IBM Interested in leveraging data in DB2 on IBM i with PHP web applications - then this session is for you! We will explore how PHP features such as the Zend toolkit and DB2 language extensions can be used to take your DB2 on i data to the web regardless of whether you prefer accessing the data through native I/O calls or through SQL compliant syntax. Additionally, this session will explore the IBMDB2i storage engine for those who want to deploy MySQL based open community applications on i and store the resulting data in DB2 tables.
"Scale Vertically with IBM Power Systems" presented by Sam Hennessy, Zend The only way to scale your PHP application is horizontally. If you believe that then you could be missing a huge opportunity. This talk will layout why scaling vertically with the Power System platform can be a superior alternative to a traditional LAMP stack.
"PHP on the i5" presented by Mike Pavlak, Zend A lot of IBM i customers are exploring PHP as a complement existing solutions. This tutorial will cover several topics that help explain the practical application of PHP in an IBM i strategy. We will explore the use of the i5 toolkit in depth with several examples. The implementation of the next generation of the Zend Stack will be reviewed along with the various installation options and a tour of the new features. Configuration and use of advanced debugging techniques using the new features on Zend Studio 7 and Zend Platform will be discussed. A review of the implementation of an open source project on IBM i using MySQL will also be included and much, much more!

EVENTS
PHP is a great development tool on its own but by incorporating AJAX you can make your applications faster, easier to maintain and even more professional looking.
PHP and AJAX together offer simple ways to make your PHP scripts simpler and even more re-usable. AJAX is not a language. There is no software that you need to install to start using it. AJAX is a acronym that refers to the use of technologies inherent in all browsers. So if you are looking to deliver the best possible web applications to your clients then AJAX is the next tool you need to add to your toolbox.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe what exactly AJAX is and is not. Define the acronym and dispel some of the hype. Separate XML from AJAX.
- Provide an example to the attendees showing each of the pieces of code that are necessary to make use of AJAX technologies. Provide a thorough description of how each piece relates to the others.
- Provide a somewhat more complex example of how AJAX can be used in a real world environment. Give the attendees some ideas of other ways that AJAX can be used possibly in their own environments.

Understand how IBM i NetServer, Network File System, QNTC, and QFileSvr.400 fit into the integrated file system structure. Learn how to use System i Navigator tools to work with the integrated file system.
Registration includes access to the five webcasts listed below, handouts for each webcast, and access to a collaborative website on iSociety for discussion and offline support.
- Session 1: Integrated File System: Fundamentals
- Session 2: Integrated File System Security
- Session 3: Integrated File System: Advanced Topics
- Session 4: IBM i NetServer: Easy Access to Data
