Zend Blueprint for Continuous Delivery

Zend Pattern for Infrastructure Automation with
    VMware vCloud Automation Center

    Purpose:

    About vCloud Automation Center

VMware vCloud Automation Center, part of VMware vCloud® Suite, provides a flexible solution for automating the end-to-end delivery and management of infrastructure and application services leveraging existing infrastructure, tools and processes. You can model services once and deploy across multi-vendor private, public and hybrid clouds, and provide on-demand self-service access to infrastructure and application services.

    About the Zend Pattern

This Zend Pattern is a Zend Server blueprint for use with vCloud Automation Center. It enables the automation of the installation, bootstrapping, and cluster management (including auto scaling) of Zend Server on private, public, and hybrid clouds.

    Why Use the Zend Pattern?

Maintaining a consistent highly available environment is key for successful application deployment and ongoing operation. Zend Server ensures configuration consistency across a cluster. When adding a server to a cluster, Zend Server will automatically change its settings to match all other servers in the cluster. Zend Server monitors all servers within a cluster and alerts on any application errors, performance issues or configuration changes, so you can act quickly to prevent issues.

We were able to implement Continuous Integration with Hudson and tie it into Maven, using the Zend SDK to create packaged applications for robust deployment using Zend Server. As a result, we’re now catching bugs before they make it to QA and pushing out new releases twice a week with much higher confidence.

Jenkins has always been an essential tool for Novadex, but deployment is not one of its native components. This means that before using Zend Server, we had to resort to creating our own scripting and packaging mechanisms for the deployment of our code. Leveraging Zend Server’s capabilities and SDK allowed this scripting to be simplified and to effortlessly support server clusters, enabling non-expert users to initiate deployments, while providing extra control and the flexibility essential for Novadex to stay at the forefront of cloud-based business communication management.
