JDS Industries

Family owned, JDS Industries is the world’s leading supplier of component parts for awards, promotional products and gifts, sign supplies and many other personalizable products. Founded in 1973 by Darwin and Jane Sletten; their son, Scott, President and CEO of the company, is now the owner along with Mike May, COO.

JDS now distributes worldwide from over 1.3 million square feet in 14 warehouses located coast-to-coast. Customer service is their first priority, with a majority of their staff dedicated to a role in that department.

Early Adopter of Open Source on IBM i

JDS Industries has trusted their business and operations on IBM i and Power Systems since the time of AS/400. Recently, they upgraded to the latest POWER9 technology, deploying IBM i on Power Systems S914 for both their production and disaster recovery environments. JDS was an early adopter of open source on IBM i, running PHP and Zend Server since 2007. They also use Syncsort MIMIX for high availability and disaster recovery.

Improve Customer Service and Increase Productivity

The company has undertaken several digital transformation projects to improve their customer service even more by streamlining the ordering experience. They redesigned their website and ordering process using open source technologies on IBM i to make it easier for customers to find what they need and also added real-time processing of orders. Anything ordered by 4:00PM local time will always ship the same day.

Their development team built an API to allow for real-time inventory data on distribution partners’ websites. They also developed a mobile app for their sales teams’ iPads to allow them to better serve their clients while on the road. The app utilizes the Google Maps API for better navigation and improved travel efficiency. JDS Industries also recently worked with IBM Champion for Power Systems Alan Seiden and Seiden Group to implement Seiden CommunityPlus+ PHP.

These projects have both improved customer service and increased productivity for their sales teams and employees. A majority of all orders from customers are now placed online via their redesigned web experience.

JDS is continuing on their digital transformation journey with IBM i on other projects as well. They are currently implementing real-time shipping information into their online ordering process, meaning customers will be able to choose the best shipping option and carrier with the lowest price and fastest service for their order.
